Australian artist Tex Crick announces his debut album, Live In… New York City. Out March 26th, it’s the first album released via Mac’s Record Label besides Mac DeMarco’s own work. While Crick is best known as an adaptable collaborator, most notably playing with Iggy Pop, Weyes Blood, Kirin J. Callinan, and Connan Mockasin, Live In… New York City presents his own fleshed-out sound. Taking a leaf from piano-driven pop records of a bygone era, the album is an homage to sentimentality, merging classic songcraft with a naturally delicate approach to instrumentation. This is immediate in the lead single/video, “Sometimes I Forget.”
“Sometimes I Forget” is a soft and mellow ode to romance: “My heart’s skippin’ like a stone // I’m hooked on you through and through // I love everything you do.” Instead of filming several New York-focused videos for the album like Crick had planned, COVID travel restrictions kept him in Japan, where he was visiting his girlfriend pre-pandemic. As a result, the video for “Sometimes I Forget” was filmed by Director Monika Mogi on Muira Beach a couple hours south of Tokyo. It visualizes the track’s sentimentality, showing Tex cheekily skipping stones on the water.
1. What made you want to pursue a life in music?
It sorta just happened. My sisters and I grew up with a piano in the house. I was constantly surrounded by people who played instruments… It came so naturally to me, so why not pursue it.
2. Can you tell us what you’re working on right now that most excites you?
Just moved into a house, here in Japan. I’m setting up a studio in the attic. I’ll be writing and recording up there most days. Working on the next album. That’ll be nice.
3. Who are your biggest influences?
There’s too many. It’s hard to say… I respect a lot of artists. New and old. More often than not, it’s the people I’m closest to. There’s so many beautiful things out there. It’s all influential, everything matters.
4. What was your favourite live concert and why?
I’m not sure if it counts, but the most unforgettable was sitting in a prison cell, there was this old Japanese guy dressed head to toe as a cowboy in another cell singing ‘Sunshine On My Shoulders’ by John Denver.
5. What would you like to say to your old/new fans?
Thanks for listening.
