Wilco

WEDNESDAY, AUGUST 27, 2025

On a warm summer night, the legendary Chicago rock band Wilco took the stage at the Pacific Coliseum as part of the PNE Summer Night Concerts series, delivering a performance that was both meticulously crafted and effortlessly loose. For a band that has consistently defied easy categorization over its three-decade career, this show on August 27, 2025, felt like a perfect distillation of their diverse catalogue.

The band wasted no time, opening with “Story to Tell,” a track that immediately set a contemplative yet powerful tone. From there, they seamlessly moved through a setlist that spanned their entire career. The intricate folk of “Handshake Drugs” was followed by the raw power of “If I Ever Was a Child,” showcasing the band’s incredible dynamic range. A highlight of the early set was the quiet, intimate acoustic performance of “Spiders (Kidsmoke),” which transformed the cavernous arena into a hushed, reverent space, underscoring the delicate beauty often found beneath the band’s louder moments.

Jeff Tweedy’s voice was in exceptional form, his signature weary croon sounding as timeless as ever on classics like “Jesus, Etc.” The full band was a well-oiled machine, with each member contributing to the complex sonic tapestry. Nels Cline’s guitar work was particularly brilliant, shifting from searing, psychedelic feedback on “Impossible Germany” to gentle, melodic flourishes on “I’m Always in Love.” The crowd, a mix of long-time fans and curious newcomers, hung on every note, swaying along to the country-tinged “Forget the Flowers” and rocking out to the heavy stomp of “Heavy Metal Drummer.”

The main set closed with the fan-favorite “I’m the Man Who Loves You,” leaving the audience buzzing with energy. The encore was a perfectly curated coda, beginning with the beloved Billy Bragg & Wilco song “California Stars.” The collective sing-along that followed was a moment of pure communal joy. The band then dove into a thunderous rendition of “Walken” before bringing the night to a fitting close with the anthemic “I Got You (At the End of the Century),” a powerful reminder of Wilco’s enduring legacy and influence. It was a night that proved Wilco remains one of the most vital and compelling live acts in music today.
